Every summer, the City of Chicago's Department of Tourism develops a theme for its summer activities and programs. For 2007, the "Art of Play" season launched with an exhibit of the playful work of French-American sculptor Niki de Saint Phalle, followed by organized game tournaments, historical exhibits related to games and game inventors, and hundreds of other interactive events surrounding the theme.
Tanagram was engaged by the City to design and produce the program brochure, but the cover design was so well received by everyone who saw it that it was used as an overall program identity. The Art of Play logotype was included in all of the City's communication and environmental graphic media throughout the summer. A custom-designed alphabet was used for the main logo art, as well as for all of the event titling. It expresses not only the fun of gaming but also the idea that fun is for all people of all ages.
